At exactly this time last year, a team of 6 Kruti dancers and artistic director, Shemoni Parekh, traveled to Mumbai to participate on the hit dance show Chak Dhoom Dhoom! Kruti was the only international team selected to participate in the show and we reached the top 9 out of over 5000 acts. Our annual recital was another success this year as we took the stage for at the Cobb Energy and Performing Arts Center. This year’s recital theme was “From Hollywood to Bollywood” to commemorate Kruti’s national and international media acclaim. We relived our favorite moments from our America’s Got Talent and Chak Dhoom Dhoom campaigns for a sold out audience!

We continued the Recital’s momentum through the summer months as we had one of our busiest three month stretches I can remember! We started the summer with a great Bollywood summer camp that had about 50 participants! In addition, ten Kruti students performed their Arangetram students - Poulomi Purkayastha, Sapna Shah, Rupal Hira, Anjali Kumar, Avanti Patel, Preeya Banit, Janki Patel, Ayshali Gauba, Chandni Nayyar, Priya Malhotra. All in all, the summer was a great success and we are extremely proud of all our graduates!

The Fall semester kicked off and we were invited to perform a show celebrating the 50th anniversary of Virginia Tech’s Indian Association. Kruti took a team of 65 performers – boys and girls – and performed for an energetic and enthusiastic audience!

Shortly thereafter, we traveled to Beaumont, Tx to perform for a thousand folks at the annual IndiaFest Gala. We had a great time performing for the IndiaFest Gala in 2010 and they called us once again to perform at IndiaFest Gala 2011!

For our final performance of the year, we were invited to perform for the Cricket Association of Atlanta Gala in front of a crowd of over 500 Atlantans. We had an excellent time performing for a different audience in our home state!

To round off 2011, one of our very own – Shivani Gandhi – has gone on to compete in Dance India Dance! We are incredibly proud of Shivani and so happy that Kruti could bring her closer to following her dreams!

We are incredibly excited for 2012 and all the great things that are in store for Kruti. We hope to share our love for Indian dance with even more people this year. So what’s next for Kruti you ask? Each year the Indian Cultural Association of Beaumont, TX hosts a Celebration Gala for all of its members and city dignitaries. We were invited to perform last year for their 25th year celebration and were called again this year for an encore! What a joy it was to perform for this audience of over 1,000 that provided constant support and enthusiasm as our students took the stage. Overall, the weekend was filled with laughter, amazing hospitality and Kruti memories that are sure to last us a lifetime!

As the year comes to an end, we can’t help but be thankful… not only because we are given opportunities like these to showcase our passion for Indian dance on a national/international scale, but to have our students to be our voices. Again, a hearty thanks goes to our students and their parents. None of this could be done without you!

Kruti students gave a one hour power-packed Bollywood performance featuring hit songs of the year strung together with a beautiful theme. Immaculate costumes, colorful backdrops, hours of practice and dedicated parent chaperones were the key elements in making this a performance to remember! What a nice way to start the Diwali celebrations of this week, don’t you think?

We would like to give a very special thank you to VT ISA for hosting and inviting us to be part of their grand event. We hope that we will perform for them again in the future!

The most recent dance from Saturday was something new for Kruti: A contemporary reflections-themed dance where girls performed both on top of mirrors and through imaginary mirrors!  Watch it below, it’s something different that you’ll definitely enjoy!

The earlier dance showcased Kruti’s excellence in classical training as the girls performed a spectacular Bharat Natyam dance (watch it here).

Catch our own Kruti Dance Academy this weekend (Friday and Saturday at 9 PM) on Aapka Colors (Dish Network)!

It gives me great pleasure and pride to announce that Kruti Dance Academy’s team has been selected to participate in Chak Dhoom Dhoom - a dance reality show on Colors TV aired out of Mumbai, India. Colors Network, owned by the familiar Viacom, broadcasts the show globally – in United Arab Emirates, across Europe and North America. In USA, the show airs on Aapka Colors (on Dish network) on Fridays and Saturdays at 9:00 PM (ET and PT.) Chak Dhoom Dhoom shows seeks to identify the absolute best dance teams: Over 5,000 teams auditioned across India, 51 teams across USA (New Jersey, West Coast, Texas), and additionally teams from UK, Germany and UAE all competed. From these, judges invited only 30 teams to participate in the mega auditions in Mumbai, India held on Jan 14-15. The Kruti team was the only one selected from USA, and one of only two international teams!!

The Kruti team is led by Shemoni Parekh and includes six other talented and accomplished students of the Kruti Dance Academy: Bianca Rama, Jaimisha Patel, Keshal Patel, Mili Shah, Shivani Gandhi, and Shreya Shah.

The Kruti team is currently in Mumbai and is enjoying considerable success! They have now moved into the gala rounds where the final top 12 teams are competing! It is a tremendous achievement that our team is able to compete head-on with the best India has to offer and in dance forms that are native or currently popular in India!!

Under the leadership of Shemoni our academy has made great strides in gaining recognition across the world. In 2009, Shemoni worked alongside “Slum dog Millionaire” choreographer Longinus Fernandez to put together a sizzling piece for “So You Think You Can Dance Canada”. As you may recall, she along with other Kruti students participated in the 2010 America’s Got Talent reality show where the team made it to the final 25 in the Hollywood round and America saw the talent from Kruti. Now through Colors TV, we are getting international exposure!!

Kruti’s success in these venues pushes the boundaries and raises the bar for all of our students and is a source of inspiration for our future dance aspirants and dreamers!

Creative director Shemoni Parekh and six students from Kruti Dance Academy are each experiencing their slice of Bollywood as they travel to Mumbai, India to participate in the hit dance show Chak Dhoom Dhoom Team Challenge. The show had immense appeal during its first season last year, and is ready to light up the dance floors again this season as it debuts with a twist: group competition.

Kruti Dance Academy was one of only three teams selected to perform at the Chak Dhoom Dhoom Press Conference, the opening event for this season’s exciting lineup. Watch the clip below to see our own Kruti girls dancing with the Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat!

The judges are among the hottest in Bollywood: Terence Lewis, a judge from Dance India Dance, brings his modern choreography expertise to the mix. Mallika Sherawat, one of the hottest Bollywood superstars, brings her strong fashion sense. Javed Jaffrey, producer and judge from Boogie Woogie, brings his decades of dance experience.

We took a team of 18 advanced students to compete in the competition. The first round - regional auditions- was held in Orlando, Florida. Shemoni Parekh, team lead and Kruti choreographer, created a unique and eye catching Bharat Natyam classical fusion piece for the team to present. Clips from this piece were featured in AGT commercials as well as print ads for the show. This piece brought the crowd to their feet as they gave a full standing ovation. Judges comments were made about the team’s impeccable synchronization and artistic appeal of choreography. All three judges gave an enthusiastic “yes” followed by a “We’ll see you in Vegas!”.  See clips from Orlando audition here. (Side note: only the top 100 acts out of the initial 100,000 acts that audition make it to Vegas.)

A few weeks later, the team traveled to Las Vegas - the home of glitz, glamour and our favorite - Cirque Du Soliel! For Vegas, we were determined to bring a different flair. This performance was also a Bharat Natyam classical fusion, but with an Egyptian theme! When we first arrived - all 100 acts were placed in three groups:

• Group A - the judge’s favorites would perform later in the day with hopes to making it into the top 48.
• Group B - the weaker acts - would perform if and only if all selections were not made from Group A.
• Group C - a select 10 acts which made it directly to the live show without needing to audition again.

Kruti was placed in Group A. The team was quite nervous as this round was only to be viewed by the three judges - not a full studio audience. Once we performed, the Judges thanked us for our dedication and stated the decision would be given to us the next day. Unfortunately, we were told that this was the end of the road for Kruti as we did not make it into the top 48 (for now…. ). The judges explained it was a hard decision and Piers stated “For the record, I do not agree with this decision”. Little did we know that we would be called back in just a few short weeks!

The week of August 9 rolls by and it was the week of our very own leader Shemoni’s wedding! As she was preparing for the week’s festivities, she got a very exciting phone call… “Kruti Dance Academy has been invited to perform in America’s Got Talent’s Wild Card Show!” Here was the kicker… “the show is NEXT WEEK!” A week of wedding festivities and rushed AGT preparation flew by! Next thing we know we were on our way to Hollywood!! Kruti took Hollywood by storm! The judges and producers loved our performance. We were one of the few acts that DID NOT receive an “X” from the judges. Sharon Osborne proceeded to give us one of the largest compliments of all time by stating that “Kruti Dance could now compete with the River Dance”.  Our experience was surreal, the appreciation we received was even greater. This was the end of our experience with America’s Got Talent, but we left with positive attitudes filled with graciousness. As our choreographer so gracefully stated at the end of our performance, “We are so thankful for living in a country where different cultures are not only accepted, they are appreciated. Thank you America’s Got Talent for giving us a platform were we could show what we do best!” Making it to the top 48 from 100,000 acts is no joke. We all truly feel like winners .

A special thanks goes out to all of our fans and voters. This was an unforgettable experience of a life time!
